You shouldn’t read this if you are successful person with a great career, wonderful life and unbelievable happy relationships. You can enjoy your life and be proud of yourself and this article is not for you.
If this is not about you, I propose that you try to name five impressive things about yourself. You can write them on a piece of paper or just list them aloud. But remember that you shouldn’t list anything you are and you should only list things that you do (you just won the national chess tournament; you make the best chilli in Massachusetts). If it’s difficult for you, it means this article will be useful for you.
Remember this rule: The world only cares about what it can get from you!
Just image that the person you love the most is lying in the street, bleeding and screaming. And suddenly an unknown guy appears, looks over your loved one’s bullet wound and he’s going to operate right there in the street.
You ask this guy, he is doctor or no, but he becomes annoyed. He tells you that he is a perfect guy; he is honest, always on time, a great son to his mother etc.
Confused, you try to explain that you need somebody who knows how to operate. But this guy becomes agitated — why are you being shallow and selfish? Do you not care about any of his other good qualities? Didn’t you just hear him say that he always remembers his girlfriend’s birthday? But you just need somebody who can stop bleeding and start to understand that the man is crazy.
It’s common with our adult world where there are the same situations every single day. Only you are the confused guy while the bleeding victim is our society.
Society is full of people who need things. That’s why you feel sometimes that society seems to shun you, or you seem to get no respect. They need comfortable houses, food to eat, special entertainment, they need fulfilling sexual relationships. The moment you came into the world, when you were born, you became part of a system designed purely to see to people’s needs.
If you want to know why society seems to shun you, or why you seem to get no respect, it’s because society is full of people who need things. They need houses built, they need food to eat, they need entertainment, and they need fulfilling sexual relationships. You arrived at the scene of that emergency, holding your pocket knife, by virtue of your birth — the moment you came into the world, you became part of a system designed purely to see to people’s needs.
You can chose: either you will allow it, seeing to those needs and learning a unique set of skills, or the world will reject you. It isn’t important how kind-hearted, polite or tender you are, because you will be poor, alone and left out in the cold.
Does it seem very materialistic? What about love and kindness? – Of course, those things matter do matter, but as long as you are doing things for people and they can’t get them elsewhere. It’s awful truth.
Let’s remember the famous speech Alec Baldwin from the cinematic masterpiece Glengarry Glenn Ross. “Nice guy? I don’t give a shit. Good father? Fuck you! Go home and play with your kids. If you want to work here, close.”-he said.
Baldwin’s character is brutal, rude and borderline sociopathic, but this is also an accurate expression of what the world wants to expect from you. In fact people consider it wrong enough to talk to you such way and it’s better to simply let you keep failing.
